♥ When Gene opened the door to the hotel room where he was keeping Kirby stashed, he did not expect to see Molly come railing at him.

“He's going into the portal, Molly,” Gene said. His voice was shaky. He couldn't yell at Molly, and they both knew it. But this time he would have to stand his ground. He'd give her anything she ever wanted, if she ever wanted anything. This time, though, he couldn't. Inferno, the town, the people, he decided, everyone depended on Kirby going through that portal.

“It's bad. It's bad bad bad! Seal it up or something, because I got a message on his finger that said not to go!” she screamed. She whipped a plate at his head.

Kirby sat on the bed in the next room with his hands between his knees listening to the two of them fight. He only wanted to put his finger in the portal. He missed it. But all three times he tried to turn that direction, Molly stopped him and turned him back toward the hotel where his room was. He couldn't even enjoy the room that Gene had given him. He had a place to sleep and everything and a refrigerator with lots of pudding and peaches and a bathroom with lotion and all kinds of things. All he could think about was the portal, but now there were always people around it, guarding it, keeping him from it. He would ask politely to go up and see it, but no one would let him. Then he'd get the feeling like he wanted to stick his finger into their mouths, and they'd seem to agree about it. After that, he could go to the hole easy.

The screaming stopped, and a few moments later Molly opened the door. She came in the room and sat next to Kirby. She put her arm around him and handed him a pudding cup. Kirby accepted it and slid his finger inside.

“I don't want you going into the portal, but Gene is a powerful fellow. And right now I don't think you really got a choice.”

“I won't go all the way in if you tell me not to,” he said. “Just my finger.”

“Baby, better men than you have said the same thing. And it never worked for them either.”
